Craigellachie 13 Year Old Bas-Armagnac Cask Finish | 46% | 70cl | Whisky Advocate Top 20 2022

Where Speyside grit meets Gascon elegance. The Craigellachie 13 Year Old Bas-Armagnac Cask Finish is the inaugural release in the Craigellachie Cask Finishing Collection — a series inspired by an unexpected connection between Craigellachie's worm-tub condensers and other producers who share that same traditional distillation method. The Bas-Armagnac casks were sourced from the northernmost part of Gascony, France: a region producing brandy of extraordinary character from ancient grape varieties, in oak barrels seasoned with decades of tradition. Craigellachie's muscular, waxy Speyside spirit was first matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, then rested in these Bas-Armagnac barrels for just over a year. The result was ranked in the Whisky Advocate Top 20 of 2022, scoring 93 points. Non-chill filtered, no caramel colouring, 46% ABV.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Bright and expressive — green apples, pineapple, tangerine, and honeysuckle alongside heather honey and baked apples. Malty notes, lemon peel, and a floral edge with lightly toasted bourbon wood
  • Palate: Freshly baked apples dusted with cinnamon, caramel shortcake, pineapples in syrup, and demerara sugar. Vanilla custard, lime, herbal honey, and sugary biscuits. The Armagnac cask influence is clear — adding a refined, French brandy warmth throughout
  • Finish: Medium and pleasingly warming — wood spice, vanilla, ginger, and a touch of peppercorn spice fading cleanly

About Craigellachie & The Cask Finishing Collection

Craigellachie Distillery, founded in 1891 by Peter Mackie and Alexander Edward in the Speyside village of the same name, produces one of the most distinctive and characterful whiskies in Scotland — known for its waxy, meaty, sulphurous complexity that divides opinion and earns devoted admirers. The distillery still uses traditional worm-tub condensers, a method that retains more sulphur compounds in the spirit and contributes to Craigellachie's bold, old-school character. The Cask Finishing Collection was conceived by drawing a connection between worm-tub distilling traditions across different spirits categories — and Bas-Armagnac, also distilled using worm-tub-style apparatus, was the natural first partner in that conversation.
