The "before" half of Bruichladdich's iconic paired Fèis Ìle 2011 release — distilled 18 June 1998, some of the last spirit made under Whyte & Mackay ownership before the distillery fell silent. Named "Ancien Régime" (old order in French). 2,500 bottles. Provides a fascinating direct comparison with Renaissance (2001).

  • Nose: Butterscotch and vanilla; toffee apple, smoke and cinnamon; cereal barley malt, honey sweet, fruity apple, lemon-lime citrus then buttery fudge
  • Palate: Rich and complex — spun sugar, fudge, butterscotch, honey, spiced gingerbread, vanilla sponge cake and apple pie with cinnamon
  • Finish: Long and golden — syrup and rum spices, sweet honey and golden syrup with spiced oak
