Today we bring another deep dive look at a famous Scottish distillery this time from the highland region, Glenmorangie Distillery. This famous distillery was founded in 1843 but the earliest indications for alcohol production on the farm and land Glenmorangie sits around 1703 according to their records.
The Socttish Gaelic for Glenmorangie is believed to be either of 2 terms Gleann Mòr na Sìth which translates to 'vale of tranquility' or Gleann Mór-innse which loosely translates to ' vale of big meadows'.
Glenmorangie is located in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland in the Scottish highlands. the stills used by Glenmorangie at the tallest in Scotland standing at 26ft 3 inches (8 metres) tall with 16-foot-10.25-inch (5.1372 m) necks. This produces a extremly light taste spirit. Like many distillers Glenmorangie experiment with different cask types on occasion, but fairly uniquely Glenmorangie make their own casks as well. In Missouri, USA they own a forest of white oak trees they use to make casks they then lease to bourbon distillers Heaven Hill and Jack Daniels to produce bourbons for 4 years then take the casks back for their spirit maturations.
Since 1983 Glenmorangie has almost continuously the best selling whisky and produces around 10 million bottles with about 6- 6.5 million in UK alone.
Glenmorangie has long history of busy and quit periods though its history like low periods of low production or stopping altogether during the depression, world wars and probation eras.
